Animal manure, the main fertiliser of medieval farming. Grain yields depended on it, and lords could require tenants to fold their sheep and cattle on the lord's own land so that the dung fell there. What was collected from yards and byres was carted out and spread on the fields. Peasants, with fewer animals and less time, often had less of it than they needed.
