Oysters

The native flat oyster, gathered or dredged from beds in estuaries and shallow coastal waters, notably around the Thames estuary, Essex and Kent. On the coast they were a cheap everyday food; carried inland, their transport cost made them an occasional luxury. Archaeological finds show medieval oysters were more widely spread across England than in Anglo-Saxon times.
