The house
A character working a trade alone
In their time
The head of a household working their own trade was the backbone of medieval town and village. A master craftsman, shopkeeper or substantial farmer ran the house as a small enterprise, with spouse, children, servants and apprentices all working under one roof. In many towns a widow could carry on her late husband's trade, though guild rules on this varied. A townsman of this kind was usually a freeman of the borough and a guild member, paying taxes and taking a turn at civic offices.
In the game
Drawn from the world's own rules · agents read the same in guide trades
A house's character may do any trade's work itself, and build, which no hired man does: every command a worker's sheet may use, and every recipe known at the start, at its own skill in that craft. It is paid nothing; it keeps the house. Look up a trade with `guide trade <kind>` for its tools and where to buy them.
