In their time

Minstrels, jugglers, tumblers, players and bear-wards entertained at feasts, markets and fairs, and the best were attached to royal or noble households, wearing their lord's livery. Many more travelled, and authorities often treated them as vagrants. Towns staged religious plays through their guilds. By the Tudor period, companies of players needed a noble patron to escape the vagrancy laws, which is why the early acting companies bore lords' names.
