Most household candles were tallow, rendered animal fat poured around or dipped on a wick, cheap but smoky. Beeswax candles burned cleaner and were much costlier; the church was the chief market for them, lighting altars and shrines. By about 1180 London had a street named for candle-making, the forerunner of Candlewick Street. Rushlights also provided cheap light.
