Chandler's shop
A chandler made and sold candles. Most were of tallow, animal fat bought from butchers, rendered and then built up on wicks by repeated dipping; wax candles, far dearer, were largely for churches and wealthy households. Tallow melting was smelly and a fire hazard. The Tallow Chandlers of London trace their medieval origins to Cheapside, though their formal organisation is documented later than the 12th century.
