The Chandler
In their time
Chandlers made and sold candles, usually tallow candles from animal fat, cheap but smoky and smelly. Beeswax candles, costly and clean-burning, were made by waxchandlers for churches and wealthy households. Chandlers depended on butchers for tallow, and their melting pots were a fire risk that towns tried to regulate. Over time chandlers sold other household goods, and ship chandlers supplied vessels.
