The Conduit keeper
In their time
From the twelfth century some religious houses, and from the thirteenth some larger towns such as London, piped fresh spring water through lead pipes to cisterns and public conduit houses. Someone had to keep the pipes clear, mend leaks and see the supply was not stolen by illicit taps, and towns appointed keepers or wardens of the conduit for the purpose. It was a small civic office, answerable to the mayor and aldermen, and relied on plumbers for repairs.
