The Crier

In their time

The town crier, or bellman, walked the streets proclaiming the orders of the mayor and council, announcing markets, lost goods and new regulations, and calling public notices in a world where most people could not read. He was a paid town officer, and his cry of 'oyez' comes from Anglo-Norman French for 'hear ye'. Criers also announced fairs, sales and, in some towns, the deaths of citizens.
