The Gong farmer
In their time
The gong farmer emptied cesspits and privies, a job usually done at night, and some towns came to insist on that by rule. It was paid well for its unpleasantness, and the waste was carted away, some of it to farmers as manure. The work was filthy and dangerous: a rotten pit floor could give way, and men could be overcome by foul air in a deep pit. However good the pay, it sat at the bottom of the social scale.
