The town · from the first age
The Innkeeper
In their time
Inns grew with travel and trade, offering beds, food and stabling to merchants, carriers and pilgrims, while alehouses served drink to locals. The innkeeper was often a substantial townsman, sometimes also a brewer or dealer, and inns served as informal places of business where goods were stored and bargains struck. Authorities held innkeepers responsible for their guests and regulated their prices for food and fodder.
