The Ostler
In their time
The ostler, or hostler, looked after the horses at an inn: stabling, feeding and grooming them, and having them ready in the morning. The word first meant the innkeeper himself and only later the stableman who answered to him. His honesty mattered, since hay and oats were charged by the night and travellers were quick to suspect ostlers of skimping the feed. A humble post, but a busy one on any main road, dependent on farmers for fodder and smiths for shoeing.
