The Carter
In their time
Carters moved goods by cart and wagon between farm, market, town and port. Many were small independent carriers, while great households and monasteries kept carts and carters of their own. Roads were often poor and heavy goods went by water where possible, so carters handled the shorter hauls and the last miles. Carrying for hire was a humble but indispensable trade, dependent on wheelwrights, smiths and sound horses.
