In their time
Rivers were England's great highways for heavy goods, and boatmen, bargemen and lightermen moved grain, stone, timber, wool and wine along them and around the coast. Lightermen ferried cargo between larger ships and the quays. Crews were often hired by the voyage or the season, and many river boats were small family concerns. Boatmen argued constantly with millers and landlords over weirs and tolls that blocked the navigation.
