In their time
Chapmen, pedlars and hucksters were the small traders of the Middle Ages, carrying pins, laces, knives, cheap cloth and trinkets from market to market and door to door, with a pack on the back or a horse to lead. They tied villages into the wider economy and carried news and gossip as they went. Hucksters were often women retailing food in towns. Authorities distrusted them, fearing theft, forestalling and unfair dealing.
