The Pilot
In their time
Pilots guided ships through tricky estuaries, channels and harbour approaches, where sandbanks and currents could wreck an unwary master. Their knowledge was local and hard-won, and a master entering unfamiliar waters would take one aboard for a fee. Pilotage became more formally organised over time: Trinity House, chartered in the early sixteenth century, came to regulate pilots on the Thames. Pilots served ship-masters and the merchants whose cargoes rode on their judgement.
