A large cooking pot of wrought iron, made by a smith, hung over the fire or stood on a trivet for stews and boiling meat. Iron cauldrons were already in use in England centuries before, as a find from Middle Saxon London shows. Cast iron was not produced in England until the late medieval blast furnace, and cast copper-alloy cauldrons became common from the 12th century.
