A cask made by a cooper from curved wooden staves, oak being preferred, shaped and held tight by hoops, with flat heads fitted into grooves at each end. Barrels were the standard container for storing and moving liquids and dry goods, including ale, wine and salted foods, and religious houses were among their heaviest users. Coopering was an established craft in the period.
