Curved, tapered boards used by coopers to build casks and barrels. Straight-grained oak was split (riven) along the grain rather than sawn, which made staves strong and less prone to leaking, then shaped with knives and adzes. Assembled staves were bound with hoops, often of split hazel or willow. Casks carried and stored wine, ale, salt fish and many other goods.

Hoop materials and stave sources in 12th-century England were not checked in detail.
