A heavy iron cutting blade with a hooked tip on a short wooden handle, forged by smiths. It was the general tool for work in coppice and hedgerow: cutting and trimming poles and rods, laying hedges, and clearing brushwood. Much medieval woodland produced 'small wood' on rotation, which made such tools an everyday part of rural work.
