Cooperage
A cooperage made casks and other vessels from wooden staves bound with hoops of wood or iron. Coopers produced tight 'wet' casks for wine, ale and water, 'dry' casks for goods such as flour, and 'white' ware such as pails, tubs and churns. Casks were the standard containers for trade by sea and river. Organised coopers are recorded in Britain from 1298, but stave-built vessels were made long before.
