Adze

A cutting tool with its iron blade set crosswise to the handle, swung downwards to trim and smooth timber rather than to fell it. Forged by smiths, it was a standard woodworking tool alongside the axe and auger, used by carpenters to dress beams and by other woodworkers, such as coopers and wheelwrights, to shape curved and hollowed parts.
