The timber body and shafts of a cart, shaped by a wheelwright or cartwright. Medieval English farms relied mainly on two-wheeled carts rather than four-wheeled wagons, drawn by oxen or horses. Ash, being strong and springy, has traditionally been favoured for cart shafts and frames, though the woods used for particular carts in the 12th century are not directly recorded.
