Wheelwright and wainwright shop

The wheelwright made wheels and the wainwright made carts and wagons, work demanding skill in shaping hubs, spokes and rims so that they fitted tightly, with a smith providing iron fittings and tyres. The Bayeux Tapestry shows a four-wheeled wagon in the 11th century, but in the Middle Ages two-wheeled carts did most farm work. Wagons with a turning forecarriage developed only in the 17th century.
