Small forged ironwork used to strengthen and join wood: nails, hinges, straps, rings, staples and similar parts. Smiths made them from bar iron with hammers, punches and drifts, and excavated English smithies have produced part-finished examples. Such fittings were needed for doors, carts, harness, mills and much else in medieval life.
