In their time
Leather was the plastic of the Middle Ages, and many trades shaped it. Cordwainers made new shoes from fine leather, cobblers mended old ones, glovers made gloves and purses, and saddlers made horse gear. In towns these trades formed separate guilds and often quarrelled over boundaries. They all depended on tanners or curriers for their leather, and on a steady flow of customers, since shoes wore out quickly.
