Cloth and leather · from the second age
The Cloth sealer
In their time
Crown officials called aulnagers measured and inspected cloth offered for sale, checking length and quality against official standards and attaching a lead seal to show duty had been paid. Towns and guilds also sealed cloth to guarantee quality. The system aimed to protect buyers and collect revenue, but aulnagers were often accused of corruption or of simply selling seals.
