Cloth and leather · from the first age
The Fuller or shearman
Also shearman
In their time
Fullers cleaned and thickened woollen cloth by pounding it in water with fuller's earth or stale urine, which matted the fibres into a dense, durable fabric. Originally done by trampling in troughs, fulling was mechanised from the late twelfth century by water-powered fulling mills, which drew the trade towards streams in the countryside. Shearmen then raised the nap and cropped it smooth. Both trades stood between weaver and merchant.
