Cloth and leather · from the first age
The Dyer
In their time
Dyers coloured wool or cloth using woad for blue, madder for red and weld for yellow, often imported or grown for the purpose. The work needed large vats, much water and fuel, and was smelly, so towns sometimes pushed dyers to the edges or down the river. Skilled dyeing could make a cloth far more valuable, and dyers in many towns had their own guilds.
