A small pointed tool, an iron spike set in a wooden handle, used to pierce leather so it could be stitched. Shoemakers, saddlers and other leatherworkers relied on it: medieval shoes and boots were sewn by hand, with holes made by awl along the seams. Awls were forged by smiths and were among the commonest small tools of the period.
