The commonest iron tool of the period: nearly everyone carried one for eating and work. Smiths made most blades by welding a hard steel cutting edge onto a softer iron back, or by sandwiching steel between iron. The blade usually tapered into a spike-like tang driven into a handle of wood, bone or antler. Knives were carried in leather sheaths at the belt, and people brought their own to table.
