Tannery
A tannery turned raw hides into leather over many months. Hides were soaked in lime to loosen the hair, scraped over a sloping beam with blunt knives, then laid in a sequence of pits filled with water and crushed oak bark of increasing strength. Tanyards needed plentiful water and were kept away from dwellings because of the stench, often on a town's edge or riverside. The finished leather went to curriers, cobblers and saddlers.

Process details are from later documentation; medieval tanning is attested archaeologically but the exact 12th-century sequence may have varied.
