Cloth and leather · from the first age
The Tanner
In their time
Tanners turned hides into leather by soaking them in pits of lime, then oak bark and water for months, even a year or more. The process was notoriously smelly and needed plenty of water, so tanneries clustered on the edges of towns or by rivers. Tanners depended on butchers for hides and on woodsmen for bark, and sold to shoemakers, saddlers and glovers. The trade was regulated to stop poorly tanned leather reaching the market.
