Fine, sticky earth dug from local pits. Clay was the most versatile building and craft material of the period: mixed with straw and dung as daub for wattle walls, fired into pottery and roof tiles, used to line furnaces, hearths and ovens, and to seal pits and ponds. Brick-making from clay was very rare in 12th-century England.
