A device for blowing air into a fire, made of leather sides fixed between two wooden boards with a nozzle. Bellows were essential to bloomeries and smithies, raising furnace temperatures high enough to smelt iron ore and to heat iron for forging. In the 12th century they were worked by hand or foot; water-powered bellows arrived in English ironworking around the 14th century.
