Glassworks
Period: 13th century (possibly late 12th)
Glassmaking from raw materials is not firmly attested in 12th-century England, where most glass was imported or recycled. The earliest record is an early 13th-century deed granting land near Chiddingfold, Surrey, to Laurence Vitrearius ('glassmaker'), and the Weald industry was well established by the 14th century. Domestic manufacture may have begun late in the 12th century. Weald glasshouses used wood-fired furnaces to make window glass and vessels.
Caveats (confidence: medium)
Anglo-Saxon glass working, e.g. at Glastonbury, used recycled Roman glass; primary production in the 12th century is unproven.
