Blowing house
Period: 14th century
A blowing house was a water-powered tin mill in which tin ore was crushed and smelted in a stone furnace, its bellows driven by a waterwheel. Tin streaming on Dartmoor is first recorded in the 12th century, but smelting then was crude, carried out in simple hearths. The blowing house was probably first used in the 14th century, and ruined examples survive on Dartmoor.
