Tool
Iron hammer
Iron ore → Iron bloom → Wrought iron → Iron hammer
Picture to come.
A hammer with a forged iron head on a wooden handle, the basic tool of smiths, carpenters and many other trades. Smiths used heavy sledgehammers and lighter hand hammers to shape hot iron on an anvil. Hammers of several sizes appear in early medieval tool finds, such as the Viking-age Mästermyr chest and a 7th-century smith's grave in Lincolnshire.
