Drawknife

A straight or curved blade with a handle at each end, pulled towards the user to shave and shape wood. Drawknives are known from the Viking Age, with two in the Mästermyr tool chest of about 1000, and the 12th-century craft writer Theophilus mentions a curved knife of this kind. Wheelwrights, coopers, bowyers and other woodworkers used them to rough out spokes, staves and handles.

The Theophilus reference is reported second-hand; direct 12th-century English finds were not checked.
