The central block of a spoked wheel, also called the nave, into which the spokes are fitted and through which the axle runs. Traditional English wheelwrights made naves of elm, whose twisted grain resists splitting when spokes are driven in, though oak was also used. The hub was shaped with an adze or on a lathe and mortised for the spokes.
