A forged iron blade with a bevelled edge, driven by mallet or pushed by hand to cut joints, mortices and recesses in wood; stronger versions were used by masons on stone. Chisels were essential to carpenters, wheelwrights, coopers and joiners, and the spread of mortice-and-tenon jointing in 12th- and 13th-century buildings depended on them.
