Hand quern

A rotary hand mill of two round stones: the upper stone was turned by a wooden handle to grind grain fed through a central hole. The best were of lava imported from the Rhineland; others were of local sandstone or millstone grit. Querns remained in use in medieval homes even as lords required tenants to grind at their mills, and some lords confiscated them.
Caveats (confidence: high)
The best-known confiscations (e.g. by the abbot of St Albans) are 13th-14th century.
