A heavy wooden cart drawn by oxen, used for hauling harvests, timber, stone and goods. Oxen were cheap to keep and strong but slow, walking perhaps one and a half to two miles an hour. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries horses increasingly replaced oxen for hauling in England, roughly doubling transport speeds, though ox carts remained common.
