Nails

Iron nails were forged one at a time by smiths from thin iron rod, pointed and then headed on an iron plate. They were relatively costly, so many timber buildings relied mainly on wooden pegs in their joints. Nails were used for doors, boards, roof laths, carts, chests and boats; clinker-built boats used clench nails hammered over small iron plates.
