Roofing made of straw, reed, heather or similar plant material laid in thick overlapping layers and fixed to the roof timbers with twisted rods or cord. It was the most common roof covering in 12th-century England, cheap and made from local materials, but it caught fire easily; by the 12th century there are records of clay tiles being encouraged in its place for fire safety.
