In their time
Carpenters built in timber: house frames, roofs, barns, mills and bridges, as well as furniture and fittings. Most medieval buildings were timber-framed, so carpenters were everywhere and some master carpenters designed great roofs for cathedrals and halls. Sawyers cut logs into planks in sawpits, and joiners later specialised in finer work. Carpenters depended on woodmen and landowners for timber.

How they learn
