In their time
The smith was indispensable in village and town, making and mending ploughshares, tools, nails, horseshoes, hinges and weapons. A village forge was often a gathering place, and on some manors the smith held land in return for keeping the lord's ploughs in iron. In towns the trade split into specialists: cutlers, nailers, locksmiths and farriers. Smiths depended on iron from smelters and on charcoal, or later coal, for fuel.

What they need
A hammer, an anvil and a file, without which the work can't be done. Also useful: a knife. They work at a smithy.
How they learn
They learn smithing by doing it: the work is practice, and practice raises their rank.
