In their time
Founders cast metal in moulds: bronze and brass pots, candlesticks, mortars and, most impressively, church bells, which were sometimes cast in a pit dug beside the church itself. Pewterers made plates, jugs and spoons from pewter, a tin alloy, and in London had their own company. Founders depended on copper, tin and lead from miners and smelters, and on the patronage of churches and prosperous households.
