A bow made from a single piece of wood, as opposed to composite bows of horn and sinew. Gerald of Wales, writing c. 1188, notes that the bows of Gwent were made 'neither of horn, ash nor yew, but of elm', and describes their power. Bows were used for hunting and war. The great English 'longbow' of popular history belongs to later centuries.
Caveats (confidence: medium)
Length and draw weight of 12th-century English bows are uncertain; avoid equating them with the later longbow.
