In their time
Rabbits were brought to England after the Norman Conquest and at first were delicate, prized creatures kept in managed warrens, sometimes on artificial 'pillow mounds', though many surviving mounds are later. Lords and monasteries held the right of free warren, and a warrener lived by the warren, trapping rabbits for meat and fur and guarding them against poachers and foxes. Rabbit began as a luxury and grew cheaper as warrens multiplied. Mole-catching was a related country skill.

What they need
